Ronald Pereira, just 18 years old, transforms a stretch of hot asphalt in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, a neighborhood in the city's west zone, into his makeshift Jiu-Jitsu mat. Amidst cars halted by traffic, this young athlete weaves through vehicles, selling peanuts and candies while appealing for financial support to compete in upcoming tournaments. 1. A Champion's Desperate Plea:

A resident of Nova Iguaçu in Baixada Fluminense, Ronald started collecting donations at traffic lights just a week after winning a gold medal in the purple belt, under 100kg division, at the South American Championship. His current mission is to raise the money needed to participate in the Brazilian Championship, which will take place in Barueri (São Paulo) from March 26th to April 4th. The journey requires covering transportation, meals, hotel stay, and event registration fees, totaling around 2,000 reais (approximately US$400).

 

2. A Path Forged by Passion:

"I've been a fighter since 2019. I got involved in the sport for the first time when I took my nephew to a Jiu-Jitsu class. I tried it, liked it, and kept training and evolving. A passion was born. I've been moving up the ranks and winning several championships. But without financial support or sponsors, honestly, I don't know what the future holds," Ronald shares.

 

3. The Reality Faced on the Streets:

On the streets, Ronald encounters a range of reactions. "There are people who encourage me, saying 'keep up the good work,' and some even applaud. But there are also those who look at me with disdain or roll up their windows when I approach," Ronald says, hoping to raise the 2,000 reais (around US$400) needed in the coming weeks. "I train early in the morning and then go straight to the traffic lights, where I stay until it gets dark. I make an average of 100 reais a day, which is about US$20," he explains.
